Champions League Group G Roma vs Plzen Preview #352

Coming off a win in the derby against Lazio on afternoon Roma picked up two consecutive wins the highest of the season. They finally go into a match with momentum and confidence beat their rivals has boosted their confidence. This week we return to the Champions League as Roma are preparing to host Czech Republic Kings Viktoria Plzen. The Czech Republic side faced off against the Romans in the Europa League group stage three seasons ago. They ended up being eliminated out of the group while Roma won the group. During the group stage Roma crushed them at home and played out a draw in the Czech Republic. At this point I don’t think the H2H really matters Roma are quite significantly the better team. Roma started their Champions League campaign and Week 1 with a 3-0 loss to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. While Victoria  played out a 2-2 against cska Moscow at home. The opening game was just a curtain raiser so I don’t believe Roma should be worried as this is a very easy group. Roma will be at home at the Stadio Olimpico hosting their counterparts from the Czech Republic. Roma should find things quite easily especially with the confidence they currently have. The sooner they’re able to pick get on a winning run it will help them not only in the Champions League but in the league as well. There’s a little less pressure behind this Roma team and their manager DiFrancesco. Roma will certainly feel so they have what it takes to get their first win the Champions League.

A.S Roma

Roma customarily use the 4-3-3 formation but have switched to a 4-2-3-1 I expect DiFrancesco to continue to use that formation as long as it’s working. Daniele de Rossi and Javier Pastore both will miss out based on what I’ve heard. Pastore picked up an injury during the derby he will definitely not play but it is said that is not too severe. In the defensive Midfield Steven Nzonzi is likely to remain in his position and coming in for De Rossi I would imagine would be Lorenzo Pellegrini. Roma born midfielder had something to do with all three goals during the Derby after coming on as a sub surprisingly after an injury to Pastore. He could be very crucial to this match as I believe he has officially arrived in Italian football. Roma’s attacking Midfield I think it would be smart to start either Florenzi or Bryan Cristante but I would say Florenzi will start but both options are good. He will be likely joined by Cengiz Under on the right wing however El Shaarawy will be an option as well. According Di Francesco Roma youngster Justin Kluivert could start the match. The question comes down to on what side he will be put . In the striker position probably will be Edin Dzeko again I don’t see there is any reason for Roma to change that. Roma’s defense should stay practically the same I would give Santon another start he has made some real progress over the last few weeks and I think he can continue that against a less talented side. However Roma could potentially start one of the youngsters again like  against Real Madrid. The key players Roma for me is Lorenzo Pellegrini after his unbelievable performance in the derby the Roma born midfielder is in for another superb showing my jaw was on the floor during his performance and I think against a team like this he could have a field day.

Viktoria Plzen

It is no secret that Viktoria Plzen are going to be massive underdogs against a Roman team who’s finally feeling confident and have a lot of momentum. Mutually their only Advantage has been taken away from them. Viktoria’s home stadiums can be hard to deal with teams who are not used to playing in a field with such low quality that was going to be there advantage and that’s the one that used last time these teams played. Viktoria Plzen is definitively the worst team in this group I know they did get a result against Moscow but that was at home in an uncomfortable place to play. I honestly don’t think they have a shot at Roma their going to be forced to defend almost the entire game because of the way I believe Roma will come forward. They may even stack the box so it makes things very difficult for Roma the only thing about that is so basically concede to not attacking them. Attacking Roma could be dangerous but they may need to get a goal anyways and that sort of strategy might not allow them to do that. Their key player I think  be Roman Prochzka. He’s showing some qualities in the past the question will come down to if his impact on the game will be enough because regardless of the situation he’s going to have to be at his best if they want the slightest chance.

Bottom Line

The bottom line couldn’t be any clearer if Roma play their game plan they should find this quite easy. It’s important that they don’t underestimate their opponents because you never know what can happen in the Champions League but if they play their game there’s nothing to worry about the three-points being secured. Roma’s strategy will suffocate anything Viktoria is going to do. I believe in Roma will attack the defense by pulling the strings in their Midfield to get forward as frequently as possible I think they’ll play very high up on the pitch so they can be prepared for any counter-attacks. I imagine they will try to get forward as much as possible getting on the counter its the best way they hit Victoria with a knockout punch. I’m not sure who Di Francesco will start but the possibility of kluivert under and El Shaarawy playing maybe not together but at some point it’s going to make things very difficult. All three are incredibly quick and if they are given service it could be a long day for the Czech Republic side. With the Lorenzo Pellegrini in that Roma Midfield with the capabilities of attacking and controlling the defense mutually gives Roma different ways to beat them. They don’t have gravitate to one game plan over another because given the difference in quality they just have to play smart and intelligent football and they’ll get out of there with a win. The Stadio Olimpico will be rocking on Tuesday night and  that Could also play in their advantage. Viktoria Plzen needs to defend at an absolute ridiculous level for them to stand a chance of even getting a point. This Roma team is a confidence bunch that now has momentum they’re going to be incredibly dangerous. With the speed throughout the squad and with the intelligent players in the team likes Lorenzo and Steven nzonzi they’ll be hard to stop especially the way they can control the defensive Midfield to create a lot of opportunities. Not to mention their defense has been excellent over the last few weeks and Robin Olson was the standout star against Real Madrid. Roma will be prepared for whatever Viktoria Plzen attempts to do. The fact of the matter is Roma have far too much for Viktoria Plzen to handle there so many ways in which they can beat them down as long as they play smart and intelligence and work together as a team there’s not a way I see even a point being spared I see Roma winning this one comfortably. Viktoria Plzen is over their heads against the lads from the Eternal City .
