Rome Turns Blue as Lazio Throttles Roma #488

Score: A.S Roma 0 S.S Lazio 3FT

Following four consecutive victories and a 9 game unbeaten run Roma faced their biggest test yet. It would be the 150th installment of the Derby Della capital between Roma and Lazio. One of football’s most iconic and intense derbies in all of football. In terms of hatred, I’m not sure there are two teams who have more hate and animosity for each other than Roma and Lazio. This match is more than then just a football match This Is World War III the hatred that these two teams share for each other cannot be explained to someone who does not understand. This is the most important game of the entire season regardless of positioning they are playing this game for pride in Rome. On paper, Roma was favored but the game is not won on paper. Lazio coming into this match lost their last three games while Roma has been unbeaten in their last nine as I mentioned. This was a monumental opportunity for Roma to create nine points of separation between them and their rivals. Not to mention Inter Milan lost yesterday and Roma could hypothetically move into the top four with a victory. It was an absolute abomination of a performance from Roma Lazio were the better teams and were deserving winners. Roma created next to nothing throughout the 90 minutes. Caicedo helps Lazio take the lead in the first half. Then coming off the bench Ciro Immobile doubled their lead from the penalty spot. As a Lazio took a 2-0 lead however that would not be the end of this late in the match Lazio would continue their demolition of Roma with a late goal in what was an eventual 3-0 victory for the blue side of Rome. Lazio now can get on equal points with Roma if they win their game in hand. An absolutely disgraceful performance from Roma who seemingly did not show up for the match.

Roma would stick with their 4-3-3 formation ahead of the derby. In goal would be Roma’s Swedish Fish, Robin Olson. An almost regular back line for Roma but Kostas Manolas would miss the Derby due to a stomach illness. At left-back would be Europe’s highest scoring Defender Alex Kolarov. Beside him would be the centre-back partnership of Juan Jesus and Federico Fazio. Then at right back to fill out the defense would be Alexandro Florenzi. In at Central Midfield would be Roma’s captain Daniele De Rossi. To his left would be Lorenzo Pellegrini. Then on the opposite side would be Bryan Cristante making up Roma’s Midfield. In Roma’s attack, we would see a similar trio in their three-headed monster. On the left wing, it would be Stephan El Shaarawy. On the opposite side on the right wing would be 19-year-old sensation Nicolo Zaniolo. Then up front as a Roma’s main Striker would be the in-form Edin Dzeko. On the bench, Roma would have some interesting options with Diego Perotti Justin Kluivert and others.

After predictions for preparations, it was just about time for kickoff as the Roman Derby writes a new chapter. The match got underway in Rome at the Stadio Olimpico the home of both of these clubs in a clash of cities. Who would take the bragging rights in this city at the derby kicked off. In the early part of the game, Lazio seems to have the control as Roma’s creation in the line of play was very limited in the opening parts of the match. Lazio struck first in the opening 2 minutes through Correa but missed. Lazio came through again just moments later has a Lucas saw his strike coast over the goal. Despite missing on their first two attempts Lazio looks incredibly strong coming forward in early moments of the first half. They were much better team early and found their footing just a little later. In the 12th minute, Lazio cut through a very exposable Roma defense and made them pay as Caicedo found the back of the net as he cut through the box with very little defensive resistance at least it seems that way. Horrible defending by Roma which has a been a constant issue this season as Lazio take a 1-0 lead in the derby. Roma tried to give a rapid response they got into space a few times but none of their chances materialized. However, following a Luis Alberto Roma had one of their only legitimate chances of the first half. Edin Dzeko Struck from distance that looked like a sure goal his shot hit fingertips of the goalkeeper to the ball denying the Bosnian Striker. Nothing else really materialized for the remainder of the first half but Lazio seemed very much control as they took a 1-0 lead into half-time.

Despite only being down by one goal it was a pretty abysmal first half from Roma they did not create much of anything and if that didn’t change Roma would be certainly in trouble. Roma did show some life at the very beginning of the second half. Nicolo zaniolo came really close on a set-piece situation then that was followed by a valiant strike from Deep from Lorenzo Pellegrini but the goalkeeper was able to deal with it. Roma starting well in the second half would going to be really important in these in the mounting a comeback. Even though Roma opened it up a little bit they weren’t able to create much. The approach from Lazio was to sit back on the lead at least for a little while because of the lack of creation they could hold their defensive shape without being exposed. With a half hour to go, Stephan El Shaarawy came close with a deep strike. However, the Italian International missed the opportunity to equalize. After creating next to nothing DiFrancesco brought in Diego Perotti for Nicolo Zaniolo and then bringing in Javier Pastore for Daniele de Rossi a few minutes later. That second substitution at the time that made absolutely no sense to me. To a certain extent, it is conceding the game Daniele de Rossi is Roma’s most passionate player and their leader taking him out of a derby was a questionable decision. A minute after the substitutions were made Alexandro Florenzi saw his shot from Deep saved by the Lazio keeper. A few minutes later Javier Pastore wastes an opportunity as his shot from point-blank range missed. Just a few minutes later in the 73rd minutes, Lazio put the nail in the coffin. In a controversial penalty decision, Lazio was given a chance from 12 yards out. A Wounded Ciro Immobile who had just entered the game. He Skied the ball but unfortunately for Roma, he skied it into the roof of the Roma net giving Lazio a 2-0 lead. Which at that point in the game seemed insurmountable. Edin Dzeko tries to respond but is header missed from a Diego Perotti cross. Patrik Schick would enter the game coming in for Stephan El Shaarawy. Just a minute later Edin Dzeko connected on another header but once again missing the target. It was an egregious performance from Roma but it was about to go from bad to worse. In the 89th minute due to some defensive breakdowns by Roma Cataldi buried his strike from distance to give Lazio their 3-0 lead. He was given a yellow card for excessive celebration. In all fairness, I cannot say I blame him this Derby means so much to these fans and players. The game was just about cooked but we saw some late drama as Alex Kolarov got two yellow cards within minutes of each other as he sees red as time expired. A derby Roma wants to forget as Lazio will take these bragging rights into next season as the Roma clubs split the season series for the second time in three years a huge opportunity wasted for Roma.

It was an absolutely miserable performance from Roma. Historically speaking Roma have dominated this Derby since Roma and Lazio have been playing matches back in 1927. It has always been a competitive Derby but over time Roma has had the advantage. Tonight the city of Rome is blue, not red. Those Words that taste like poison coming out of my mouth. Everything was there for Roma they are in better form they were unbeaten in nine games and on a four-game winning streak. Meanwhile, prior to the match, Lazio had lost three consecutive games and we’re without momentum and confidence not to mention their best player did not start the game. Lazio dominated this match from the very beginning. This was an unbalanced Derby Lazio wherein cruise control from the first kick of the ball. Roma created next to nothing in the first half and didn’t Supply any real conviction that they were ever in this game. I felt the Tactical decisions especially with the substitutions for poor and overall it was a disastrous performance from Roma. Lazio took the lead early in a second-half penalty applied the pressure even more. Federico Fazio conceded a penalty that ended up changing the outlook of the game. Going back and looking at it probably was not a penalty but I feel even though they got momentum from that goal Roma were never going to win this game. They didn’t create enough they lacked creativity and sound life quite difficult in an attacking sense. Lazio cut through the Roma defense on an almost regular basis making it very hard to avoid the inevitable. With the opportunity to overtake 4th place with Inter Milan’s earlier loss they completely choked the opportunity. Not only that they had potentially the chance to prevent Lazio from Champions League football next season. Going into this match Roma had a six-point lead above their rivals. Lazio has a game in hand and even now minimized it if they are able to win that game Lazio have a great chance to finish above Roma. With all that being said Roma will probably still finish above them but Lazio just made things really interesting. They throttled Roma they were never in this game as Lazio just ran through them. A performance of complete control as Roma need to regroup and quickly as they play the second leg of the champions league on Wednesday. Once again the pressure on Eusebio di Francesco will be Revisited after an abysmal display in the most important match of the season. The Rome Club split the season series but unfortunately for Roma, they have to wait at least six months to get their Revenge. Roma rolled out of bed they never showed up for this match and Lazio was there to take advantage of it.
