Zorro Arrives Paulo Fonseca Takes the Reins At Roma Agreeing On a Two-Year Deal #572

Roma is coming off one of their were seasons they have had in recent memory. Following yet again summer selling key players the struggles with consistency in the league meanwhile failing to get back into the Champions League. Roma went through coaches Eusebio DiFrancesco & Claudio Ranieri. Roma has started the summer trying to change the foundation and structure trying to make the important decisions to help this Roma team grow into a champion. Their first order of business was finding a worthy candidate for the vacant sporting director position. After seeing a Monchi resign earlier in the season. Roma opted for Torino director Petrachi who has a growing reputation in Italian football. The Next steps was arguably the most important decision Roma has to make this summer finding the right manager to lead this team into the future. There’s been quite a bit of shift around with Antonio Conte returning to Serie A with Inter Milan Maurizio Sarri On the verge of joining Juventus as well as Gasperini extending his stay in Atalanta. It was an incredibly important decision for Roma to make arguably one of the most difficult jobs on the market giving their pressure & ability to taking Roma back into a place where they can challenge for titles. It appears after weeks of searching they have finally found their man to take this team forward. Sassuolo Roberto De Zerbi, Bologna’s Milihalovic, AC Milan former manager Gattuso & the strong favorite to take over the job Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca. Over the last several days Roma had opened negotiations with the Shakhtar Donetsk over the possibility of luring away Pablo Fonseca. Very early in the process, it was made known that the Portuguese manager was very interested in me prospect of taking over at Roma. He was the best candidate available after having led the Ukrainian side to 3 titles and 4 cups as well as runs through Europe in his 3 years in charge. Roma met with the Ukrainian champions to try to come to an agreement to release Fonseca from his contract that still had a few years to run. The Portuguese manager had a 5 million release clause in his contract. Roma was trying to negotiate a deal that would not require any compensation. After weeks of talks in negotiations, it finally comes into fruition. Shakhtar’s Paulo Fonseca agreed on personal terms with Roma on a 2-year deal with an option for a third year eventually both sides agreed as Roma have seemingly found their man to lead this team into the future. Fonseca has new innovative ideas as he has shown on a regular basis as he has developed one of the highest profile managers in Europe. He was absolutely the best case scenario for Roma everyone is elated that they got the job done. Prior to winning trophies in Ukraine. He spent time throughout Portugal with Braga, Alves, Paco De Ferriera & and Porto having one some cups as well as taking teams to further heights than expected. After all the agreements were finalized Shakhtar gave their former manager a touching tribute wishing him the best on his new adventure. Meanwhile, Paulo Fonseca arrived to Rome earlier this week as he is expected to have his first interview in charge of Rama in the next few days. Upon his arrival, he had this to say about his new adventure ”

“I am very pleased to be appointed the head coach of AS
“I want to thank the club’s management for the opportunity they have given me. I am excited and motivated by the task ahead of us.
“I cannot wait to move to Rome, meet our fans and get started. Together, I believe we can create something special.””

He will be starting in the coming weeks. With this  Roma’s summer can finally begin as a have the manager to take them into the next era of Roma. This appointment signals Roma’s intent to challenge for Europe next season.

After being in charge of some Youth teams Paulo Fonseca was appointed to CD Alves it seemed that at the time was in Portugal second tier. He led them to a third-place finish in 2011/2012 just two points from promotion. You could see his promise as a manager very early in his career. The Following season he signed for Pacos de Ferreira again showing some amazing progression as a coach taking an unlikely team to the Champions League following a 3rd place finish in 2012/2013. Following that season back-to-back champions, FC Porto came calling. His time at Porto was relatively successful but he struggled at times. He leads FC Porto to supercopa triumph over Victoria however he was unable to make it to the end of the season. He left FC Porto in 3rd place 9 points behind eventual champions Benfica. In 2014 he returned to Pacos de Ferreira once again he overachieved finishing in 8th place. He’s truly breakthrough season would come The Following season in charge of Braga during the 2015 2016 season. Not only did he lead Braga to a top 4 finish he won the Portuguese league cup to cap off and Incredibly strong season. After sustained success in Portugal. Ukrainian Giants Shakhtar Donetsk gave him an Unbelievable opportunity. He was going to have the chance to play in Europe on a regular basis. Replacing the greatest manager in their history of the club Mircea Lucescu. It was a lot of pressure but nothing that he wasn’t capable of overcoming. Even though the Romanian legend did some great things with Shakhtar Donetsk Paulo Fonseca delivered on a consistent basis. Paulo Fonseca was named coach of the season during his debut campaign in Ukraine. He won of the league double securing the league title as well as winning the Ukrainian League Cup. In addition to that, he made it to the round of 32 of the Europa League winning their group securing all 18 points going unbeaten before eventually going out to Celta Vigo. In the 2017/2018 his second season in Ukraine it was arguably his best as a coach. Once again Shakhtar Donetsk did the league double winning the league title & the league cup as well as a winning the Super Cup before the seasons. A champions league campaign that was truly special for Pablo Fonseca in a very tough group with Feyenoord Pep Guardiola Manchester City and Maurizio Sarri’s Napoli. by surprise, Shakhtar Donetsk finished second in their group behind Manchester. During the group stage, he beat both Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Sarri. In the round of 16, believe it or not, he faced Roma for a spot in the quarter-final. Shakhtar Donetsk even won the first leg before ultimately a second-half goal from Edin Dzeko put Roma on the brink of European glory as Ukrainian champions fell just short. This past season Shakhtar Donetsk was as dominant as usual winning the league title and the Ukrainian League Cup for the third consecutive year in what was eventually his final game in charge. In Europe, his team didn’t have the same juice as the year before. Once again they were in a Champions League group with Pep Guardiola but they were completely dominated this time around. Shakhtar Donetsk finished 3rd earning themselves a place in the Europa League round of 32 but Luka Jovic and Frankfurt were too much as they went out in the round of 32. It is clear that Roma know what they’re doing when they decided to hire him he has done a tremendous job especially given the fact they are level up from the teams he has managed it is the next step in his career in a huge job like Roma is but he is certainly ready and prepared for it given the fact that Roma are not in the Champions League this season this is the best manager they could have got he has won 58% of his games slightly more than Antonio Conte who has had better teams. He is one of the highest-profile young managers in Europe and he is certainly up for this challenge.

Paolo Fonseca was attracted to this Roma project because of the quality. Especially with in the young players. He has new innovative ideas is incredibly smart manager with the ability to take Roma’s distance. He is the absolute best that Roma could have hoped for  one of the highest profile managers on the market even though he’s relatively young he has been extremely established during his short career. He is taking teams with far less talented than this Roma team has to the next level he has over achieved in practically every place he has been. He is technically sound and brilliant he plays really attacking football with the ability to adapt to all kinds of circumstances. Paulo Fonseca typically operates out of the 4-2-3-1 formation that this Roma team is somewhat similar with having used it for a good bulk of the season. However his Tactics in terms of strategy and the way they attack is completely different to what we have seen from Roma this season. He will have new ideas and a system that can get the very best out of this Roma team. Paulo Fonseca has the ability to lead this team the distance maybe not this coming season but in the near future. With the young Talent that exists in the within the squad with the likes of Nicolo Zaniolo Justin kluivert Lorenzo Pellegrini and others. A team that will only grow with their potential. Paulo Fonseca has everything it takes to get the absolute best from The Young Talent that Roma have to offer. Roma may have had issues with inconsistency last season for Roma have all the capabilities to change that this team is a year older and a young Talent within the squad is only going to get better in the years to come. Paulo Fonseca has the ability to mentor them and get the very best from their ability. He plays a high pressing attack a defense that pushes all the way to the half line . It will be very interesting to see what kind of business Roma does in the transfer market and now that they have hired a coach. The Portuguese manager believes in a system and will try to fill the best players possible in that system and will try to fill the best players possible in that system to win games. like I said he prefers the 4-2-3-1 formation but has been known to use before 4-4-2 in certain situations. Let’s not forget he beat both Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Sarri he knows tactically cutting-edge ideas that can be very effective. His first job with this team other than trying to replicate or figure out the type of Tactics in system he wants use within the team is getting them into the Europa League. They will start to season through qualifying if they manage to get through this Roma team with the young Talent in a young brilliant coach they could be one of the favorites to win it. Winning Europa League in his first season would be tremendously successful the ambitions Paulo Fonseca and the Roma club the pressure will be extremely high regardless getting back into the Champions League it’s something that will be very important for Roma. We should see in the next few weeks what kind of signings we will see from him. Roma need to give him full access to the transfer market allowing him sign the players That he feels would have most benefit his team going forward. Roma have to buy in to the manager if they want to see real progression that he feels would have most benefit this team going forward. Roma have to buy in to the manager if they want to see real progression. This was Roma’s most important decision of the summer. Given his background and what he has accomplished he has all the tools necessary to lead this Roma team back into Europe. Paulo Fonseca is excited and prepared for the new challenge in the long run I believe it will prove they got this one right.
