Roma vs Cagliari Match Day 7 Preview #652

Roma is coming off a disappointing 1-1 draw to Wolfsburger in the Europa League in a match they probably should have won. Prior to that, they picked up three points last weekend against Lecce thanks to an Edin Dzeko second-half goals in what was a 1-0 victory. Roma returns home this week as they host Caglalri in search of momentum after European disappointment in midweek. Roma should be ready and prepared for this match after resting a bulk of their team on Thursday. Meanwhile, Cagliari has done relatively well this season and are coming off a 1-1 draw against Hellas Verona. Roma won the season series between these two teams a year ago with a 3-0 victory at home and it was a 3-3 draw away from home in what was one of Roma’s most embarrassing performances of the last season as they collapsed in the last 10 minutes. With International break looming is important that Roma reclaim some of the momentum as they have a tough challenge that lies ahead. It should be an exciting match up on a Sunday afternoon in Rome at the Stadio Olimpico. Can Roma game some momentum in an emphatic victory or does Calarli have an upset on their hands we will find all that out and more when Cagliari travel to Rome to face Roma in the capital city.

A.S Roma

Roma has had to deal with some injury concerns over the last week. It puts Paulo Fonseca and Roma in a precarious situation. With Lorenzo Pellegrini gone for two months, things will become a little bit more difficult. Lorenzo Pellegrini is Roma’s most valuable player in the Midfield & does not function at the same level without him. Meanwhile, they still do not have a Diego Perotti back or Cengiz Under and on top of that Hendrick Mkhitaryan also picked up an injury and will not be able to play this game either. Roma will have to switch some things around to try to recuperate what they don’t have right now. In goal as always will be Pau Lopez who was rested on Thursday. A backline consisting of Alex Kolarov at left-back Chris Smalling and Federico Fazio as the center-back partnership. That makes the most sense because of the size and the imposing physical factors as both players stand relatively tall. Then at right-back, we should expect to see Leonardo Spinazzola. In the defensive Midfield, I’m not sure we’ll see that many changes as Bryan Cristante and Jordan Veretout have solidified themselves in that position. Then in the attacking Midfield, we should see Nicolo Zaniolo in the center position Justin Kluivert and Alessandro Florenzi on the wings. Then upfront we should see a rested and energized Edin Dzeko. Roma will have options on the bench but they could be somewhat limited given the status of the injuries of this team.

Cagliari typically lineup out of the 4-3-1-2 formation. They have really turned the corner this season as they are an incredibly strong team that is just a few points behind Roma. In goal for Caglalri is former Roma goalkeeper Robin Olsen. They play with a backline of former Roma wingback Luca Pellegrini, beside him is he center-back Partnership of ceppitelli, piscane, then at left-back is likely to be Cacciatoree. Cagliari plays with three defensive midfielders in front of the backline with radja nainggolan in the middle then Cigarini on the left & Nandez on the right. Sitting just beneath the striker will be Rog in the center-forward position with Giovanni Simeone and Pedro as the strikers. The key player for Cagliari in this match is Rajda Nainggolan due to his experience in the stadium that he used to call home.

Bottom Line

Roma is not as full strength in that could be somewhat of an issue at some point in this game however they must find a way to win this game. Even though there are glaring injury concerns with this team Paulo Fonseca resting several key players on Roma on Thursday. Edin Dzeko Alessandro Florenzi Alex Kolarov and Jordan Veretout all were given a significant amount of rest on Thursday and should be ready and energized for the match ahead. Going into the international break is very important that Roma do everything they can to pick up three points. Roma wants to stay in contention for Champions League football even in the early part of the season. They are the more talented teams and even an injury-riddled Roma team has enough qualities to get them to the end of the line at the end game. However, Cagliari is no slouch they are a very tough team to play they beat Napoli at the San Paolo that is an incredibly big result for a team like that. they have dominated the entire game but none the less they found A way through. There’s a couple of former Romans on the team as well with Robin Olsen and radja nainggolan who have played a lot of games in the Stadio Olimpico. That could be crucially important especially for the Belgian midfielder who spent five Seasons in Rome with Roma. They have some good players surrounding them and certainly have enough to get the result. Cagliari will go into this game as underdogs and even though Roma isn’t at full strength they are the better team. Caglalr’s game plan should be very simple to try to cut through the Midfield into space. Roma’s defense has been less than Stellar this season however with all that being said without Lorenzo Pellegrini even though Roma Midfield is stronger they have the potential to break through just because the Midfield does not operate at the same level without Lorenzo Pellegrini. They’re still incredibly strong in that area but Roma typically hasn’t figured out how to adapt as of yet. As they’re in the process of making things happen without Lorenzo Pellegrini even though I believe Roma will win this game it can be difficult. It will allow Caglalri to break if they get into space. Meanwhile, Roma’s point-of-attack will be through the counter-attack on the wing they will not be as fluid as they normally are without Lorenzo Pellegrini but they have enough to break inside. Justin kluivert when he has a ball at his feet is one of the fastest players in the league they must find ways to feed him on the outside you can be incredibly effective as a facilitator on the way or providing service to Edin Dzeko. The Bosnian has been as clinical as anyone on this Roma team. Roma needs to start the game fast so Cagliari is playing from behind very early. Much like Roma Calgalri defense has not been particularly well thought of this season they just dropped points to Hellas Verona one of the new teams in the league it was a defensive mistake that cost them. Even though Robin Olsen is good enough to start in this league and has been tremendous. He just wasn’t good enough for Roma and the fact that many of the Romans have played with him before and may have some tricks up their sleeves to trick him. I think it will be an incredibly tough match but Roma has too much Firepower even if they have injury concerns they will get three points from this game. Robin Olsen won’t sabotage Cagliari from winning this game but the defense that is in front of him just might do that. You cannot make mistakes against this Roma attack they will make you pay for it. Roma must be mistake-free as well If they can do that and they get out on the break early in the game they could blow them away but Cagliari has weapons and are have the toughness to their side and will make it difficult on Roma. however, I think Roma will pull away and take all three points into International break.
