Serie A Weekly Review Match Day 10 #678

Atalanta 2 Napoli 2FT

In one of the matches of the week, we saw two of the most attacking-minded teams go head-to-head at the Stadio San Paolo. After Atalanta’s magical season last year, they have proven that it wasn’t a fluke and despite losing some players they are capable of finding a place in the Champions League yet again perhaps even a title challenge. Their away form is not to be questioned as they have proven on a regular basis that they are the real deal capable of picking up big points away from their own ground. Meanwhile, Napoli had their own dilemma as they were trying to fight their way back into the title race this season. The Naples side despite having the best manager in Italian football has a dealt with struggles of as one of the favorites for the title see their chances of bringing that elusive trophy back to Naples slipping through its fingers everything was at stake for Napoli an unfavorable results could have seen them lose grip of their Champions League place. Napoli coming into the game had dropped points in three of their last four matches only managing to get draws down at that stretch. While Atalanta was Finding ways to get points even without their best player duvan Zapata still out with injury. The most anticipated match midweek turned out to be quite a thriller. Atalanta found things a little difficult and the opening parts of the first half has Napoli’s attack looked breathtaking with their ability to get into space so concisely with the speed and Pace that Napoli has in their squad. The story of the first half missed chances by Napoli. There were so many opportunities for them to breakthrough eventually they did but Atalanta’s goalkeeper Made things as difficult as possible. Napoli eventually broke through in front of the crowd at the San Paolo. On a beautiful counter-attack, Callejon delivered a perfect ball into Maksimovic who buried a header into the back of the net to give Napoli the 1-0 lead. Atalanta had a few chances in response but Napoli seemed to be in cruise control. Dries Mertens hit the post nearly increased their advantage. However, A goalkeeping Masterpiece from Gollini kept Atalanta in the game as Atalanta broke through late in the first half. As Remo Freuler on a well-executed play scored slipping the ball through the legs beating Alex Meret as he to equalize. It became a back-and-forth match in the second half has no team was really claiming superiority. However, on a beautifully executed counter-attack, Milik went around the goalkeeper putting the ball into an empty net to give a Napoli the 2-1 lead late. Napoli was on the verge of getting themselves back into the title race however controversy struck late in the match. With less than 10 minutes ago Napoli had a penalty claim that was denied by the referee that angered Carlo Ancelotti Causing him to get sent to the dressing room. Within minutes Atalanta went on the other end as Ollic cut through inside the box after being supplied a perfect pass before sliding the ball into the top corner to equalize making it to 2-2 with not much time left. In the closing moments Atalanta had a late chance when a Luis Muriel perfectly set up Ollic again he’s dropped the ball wide trying to beat Alex Meret to the far post but the Napoli goalkeeper made to save as the match ended with a 2-2 draw. Napoli has to feel unjustified After not getting a penalty call prior to Atlanta’s equalizer. However, Napoli’s inability to convert on chances in the first half contribute to dropped points, in the end, Napoli fall out of the top four after wins for Roma and Lazio went down to 6th with a hugely important match against Roma on Saturday despite the penalty Napoli have massively underachieved this season. Meanwhile, Atalanta are now only five points off Juventus and have found a way into the title race.

Roma 4 Udinesse 0FT

It was an almost perfect performance for Roma last night. As they have struggled with forms for a good portion of the season not to mention all the injuries they have to endure they are finally starting to get back on the right track. Despite their struggles, Roma had a legitimate opportunity to climb the table into the top four which for this club has become an expectation with Napoli and Atlanta playing dropped points by the Naples side and a victory by Roma would have taken them into the Champions League flights With a match with Napoli upcoming. This turns out to be a really important match largely because they want to continue their confidence and momentum. After a very impressive victory vs AC Milan, the Romans headed out on the road to the Northeast to face Udinesse. The teams split the season series last year but Roma went into the game as heavy favorites. Udin just lost 7-1 loss over the weekend to Atlanta manager Igor Tudor’s job was hanging by a thread and they needed an improved performance, unfortunately, Roma was just overwhelming to handle. Roma was Sensational throughout the match but Udin beat themselves by their own mistakes miscommunication in the backline allowed Nicolo Zaniolo to cut through putting the ball in between the Keeper’s legs to give Roma the 1-0 lead. Roma was dominating and we’re in complete control from the first kick of the ball. They were incredibly effective through the Midfield as they posed a threat. Even after being given a lifeline they struggled to catch any momentum in the game. Federico Fazio late in the first half was sent off with a straight red card in what was an absurd decision as on the reply didn’t display that it was even worth a card. Roma was down to 10 men despite being a disadvantage nothing changed as Roma still had control. It was a 1-0 Roma lead in the first half in the second half it was an offensive explosion by Roma. Just minutes into the second half Chris Smalling scored his first Roma goal highlighting another Udin defensive mistake coming off the corner Defenders miss handling the situation allowing the ball to fall at his feet before scoring an incredibly easy goal to give Roma the 2-0 lead. This is only the beginning just a few minutes later at Roma got on the counter-attack which could only be described as a piece of art Edin Dzeko Javier Pastore and Justin kluivert quick passing Attack lead to a Roma goal from end-to-end. Javier Pastore found Justin kluivert on the edge of the box the talented Dutchman causes the defender to hit the floor before curling a strike at the near post hitting the bar before going into the back of the net to give Roma a 3-0 lead. However, it did not end there shortly after Roma were given a penalty following a handball in the Box. Alex Kolarov beat the keeper to give Roma the 4-0 lead. it was truly a statement game as Roma send a message to their Champions League competitors that when they have confidence & momentum they are a problem. Another great defensive performance and improvements in the Midfield. Roma wins back-to-back games as they leap Napoli into the top four who they will play this Saturday with a chance to increase their gap. A collective perform by Roma as this team continues to gather momentum.

Juventus 2 Genoa 1FT

Meanwhile, in Turin we saw a clash that was filled with drama and controversy. Thiago Motta Led relegation-threatened Genoa to a come-from-behind victory in his debut as manager last week against Brescia. It was an incredibly impressive display as all of his substitute scored in what was a tactical genius based on his performance. Genoa had a wall to climb to get out of the relegation zone and they seem to be trapped in this position the road to safety would not get any easier has it had to travel on the road to face title favorites Juventus at Allianz Stadium. A place in which Juventus has not lost hardly any games since the stadium has opened. It was a mountain to climb in a true challenge for a Genos that are just trying to escape relegation. The Champions look to reclaim first place after a disappointing performance last time out against Lecce only managing a point in a game they should have had no issues getting the three points even with Cristiano Ronaldo being rested they still had more than enough and drastically underperform. As difficult as Juventus can be Genoa met with Juve at the right time and could have potentially left with points but were denied by controversy. Throughout the match it was a very even throughout Genoa was handling themselves really well against a team with significantly more talent and ability than them. Genoa was starving for a point and they were going to do anything they could to prevent that. However, Leonardo Bonucci gave Juve the 1-0 lead in the first half. Despite the fact that Radu was playing exceptionally well and keeping Genoa in the game but he eventually was beaten. However, there wasn’t a sense of discouragement from general as they sell stuff they had the team and their ability to get a point after beating them last season. The main man for Genoa as Christian Kouamé scored an absurd goal to equalize to end the first half. The young striker fooled everyone when he fired a shot off of his other leg that gave Gigi Buffon no chance to save it as it landed in the back of the net. The Genoa support exploded he slid in front of the fans as Genoa Drew level against the heavy favorite Juventus. Early in the second half, Genoa was reduced to 10 men as cassata was given a second Yellow Card. The drama didn’t stop there a little later in the match Juventus were reduced to 10 men as well after Rabiot was given a straight red after a dirty tackle. The drama would intensify in a very close match as Genoa we’re on the verge of an extremely big point away from home. However a few minutes before the end Cristiano Ronaldo scored at least that is what we thought Ronaldo strike was taken away by VAR as it remained level. Then in the 93rd minutes, Cristiano Ronaldo won a penalty in what was an absolutely egregious display a play-acting from Cristiano Ronaldo. Cristiano Ronaldo started to throw himself at the ground before contact. For some Godly reason, there was no VAR check Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to deliver the penalty as Juventus took the three points and what was a 2-1 victory taking them back to the top of the table. Genoa leaves with a bad taste in their mouth after seeing a strong performance get stolen by a horrendous penalty decision. Despite the circumstances Thiago Motta’s Genoa showed quality that was just not justified by horrendous late decision that give Juve the benefit of the doubt yet again as the narrative surrounding Juventus doesn’t do it any favors as we have seen so many times Juventus grab points under controversial situations we seem to have an officiant problem and Italy as a team that did everything necessary to earn points gets denied exactly that.
