Roma vs Juventus Talking Points #738

Yesterday evening Juventus and Roma went to battle in what was the one of the most exciting matches of the weekend. Even though the Juggernaut Juventus historically have a significant Advantage ahead of Roma. Coming to the Stadio Olimpico has never been a simple task. In fact their last victory in Rome dated back to 2014. This was never going to be an easy task despite this Juventus started as fast as they could imagine. Demario stuck his foot through the ball as he took the ball into the back of the net coming off a free kick. This would give Juventus a 1-0 lead after just several minutes. Roma tried to respond with a few opportunities that did not go their way. Then again just a few minutes after Juventus scoring the opener they would have a chance to double it in the opening 10 minutes. Jordan Veretout pulled down Paulo Dybala in the box as Juventus was given a penalty. Stepping up to deliver for Juventus would be none other than Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese stepped up from 12 yards out as simple as you like putting it into the back of the net to give Juventus a 2-0 lead. Despite Juventus being in front Roma were playing at a much higher cliff throughout the game. They had more possession they had significantly more scoring opportunities and look dangerous more often it wasn’t the best performance for Juventus despite a fast start. However similar problems would come up yet again for Roma as the team’s finishing ability just wasn’t good enough. On top of that late in the late in the first half. Roma were dealt with a big blow as the injury problems would only continue. Only this time it would be from one of them is it most important players. Nicolo Zaniolo had to be taken off by a stretcher he has since been diagnosed with a ruptured ACL he will miss the rest of the season. Roma continued to try to find a way back into the game in the second half. Losing Zaniolo to injury and Roma continue to fail to convert in front of goal. Eventually Roma would get a goal back though after a handball the Romans would get a penalty. Stepping up would be Diego Perotti who converted from the spot to minimize the deficit. Juventus played scared in the second half and gave Roma far too many opportunities to at least get a point from the game however issues with finishing in front of goal plagued them. As Roma come up short in an utterly disheartening performance. As Juventus now stand alone at the top of the table.

Roma Slip out of the Champions League

Unfortunately after result on Sunday Roma fall out of their Champions League place that they have had control of for the last several weeks. It is back-to-back losses for the Romans in matches they very easily could have gotten points from. Roma’s inability to finish off chances continues to be a problem it largely attributed to the result. Roma need to pick up wins not only for League positioning but for confidence. After losing both matches since the winter break Roma really need that momentum back and they’re not going to get it unless they get a victory. The match on Thursday could be important even though it doesn’t reflect League table a win in the Copa Italia will give them some confidence. Even though Roma are not in the best. At the moment they have an opportunity to try to change how things have gone with some winnable games over the next few weeks. In addition to that there’s not need to panic yet as they still have a six-point lead between themselves and Cagliari who was in sixth. They are in the same point total as Atlanta but because of head-to-head advantage that they have they are ahead of Roma despite the the points being the same. It is clear Roma need to start winning more games more consistently. This was a match in which they played really well but couldn’t put it all together. With the injury concerns it certainly doesn’t help the situation but with Justin kluivert and others coming back soon Roma should start picking up points more frequently having the most difficult part of their schedule to this point over with.

Juventus to the top of the league

Even though Juventus didn’t perform particularly well they took advantage of the opportunities they had in the match. It has been a two-horse race between Juventus and Inter Milan. It has been a back-and-forth battle pretty much the entire length of the season. While I still believe there is a title race is in Inter’s hands the defending Champions have created at least a little bit of separation. Antonio Conte and Inter Milan did not perform particularly well this weekend against Atalanta who nearly beat them. A 1-1 draw with the side from Bergamo allows Juventus to have a two-point cushion at the top of the table. That is not a lot but nonetheless if Juventus continue to pick up the point they need it’s going to make things really difficult on Inter Milan during the second half of the season because of this small Advantage Inter Milan will need be more or less spotless. At the moment Inter Milan need to hope for drop points if this doesn’t happen very consistently they are going to need to have to stay on their tail. That wasn’t a great performance yesterday in Rome but they beat Roma at the Olimpico the first time in four years which only enriches their Ambitions for another scudetto this season. It’s far from over but Juventus take a big step as they pull away a little bit from Inter Milan.

Nicolo Zaniolo Out for Season

Injuries have been an issue all season and in spite are the amount of games important players that have had to miss Paulo Fonseca has done a well enough job to keep Roma afloat in the race for Champions League football. This has come down to a lot of adjustments and systematically figuring things out to make this team as dangerous as he can given the circumstances of injuries. However Roma got a big blow in the first half of the game yesterday. Nicolo zaniolo is the future of Italian football he is one of the best young players in all of Europe. He has been although at times inconsistent and a player that needs to work on decision-making he is a player that can take Roma up a level with his performance. He has world-class qualities and the ability to become a legend at Roma. He extended his contract in the summer after his breakout season and is only continued to solidify what he’s already done. He was having a great season with six goals already before winter break. This has been yet another Sensational season for the young Italian. Unfortunately last night he had to be carted off the field by structure and taken to Roma’s Hospital in what looked like an apparent knee injury. It has been diagnosed as a ruptured ACL the young Italian is expected to miss the remainder of the Season which puts Roma in an unfavorable situation. This also could mean he will miss the European championships this summer. He was a shoe-in for the squad and without question was going to be picked. This is not only a blow for Roma but for the kid. Over the last year-and-a-half she has become one of the best youngsters in the league. To see him carted off in tears was a really surreal an emotional moment. He is one of the brightest stars in this league and it’s such a hard gut retching thing to watch. He will come back stronger than ever and show everyone who he is. He is committed to Roma and he would like to stay his entire career. It’s easy to fall in love with a kid like that. I really did appreciate the gesture that Cristiano Ronaldo made in that moment. When he was in tears Cristiano Ronaldo consoled him after his injury a very classy thing by Cristiano Ronaldo who did not need to do that. This injury is going to be a big problem for Roma if it is not dealt with because of this Cengiz might be staying in Rome after all. Roma will also have Justin kluivert back and Diego Perotti is also another option. As well as Hendrick Mkhitaryan who should be back from injury soon. however it Roma will probably try to dip into the transfer market to try and sign Politano from Inter Milan before the transfer window closes to give Roma another option the former Roma youth Prospect would welcome the return. Things have been bad this season but when it seems like it couldn’t get any worse Nicolo Zaniolo is out for the season it’s just a bad situation right now and Paulo Fonseca is doing the best he can to try to get Roma out of it. Roma have to win something for Zaniolo.
