Roma vs Genoa Preview Match Day 20 #742

Roma are coming into the match this weekend after they advancing to the quarterfinals of the Coppa Italia with their Victory against Parma on this Thursday. It was a much-needed victory for momentum and confidence. Despite this Roma are yet to secure a league win prior to winter break ending. They have dropped two games in a row for the first time this season and are looking to get back on the right track in the league. They recently fell out of Champions League place and Roma have the opportunity to get back there. Last weekend they fell to Juventus at the Stadio Olimpico in what was an incredibly disappointing game as they had opportunities to win that game. To make matters worse Nicolo Zaniolo ruptured his ACL and it is expected he will miss the rest of the season. Roma are in a situation where this is a must-win with the Derby against red hot Lazio coming next weekend. Roma headed out on the road to face in Genoa for the second time this season. In the first meeting it was a very exciting 3-3 draw in which Roma had taken the lead on three different occasions. Roma are a much better team since then and will go into this game as heavy favorites as a Genoa are finding things difficult this season as they are one of the favorites to be relegated. Roma have an eight-game winning streak away from home and are looking to extend it. Will Genoa defend their home against a high-powered Roma attack? Or will Roma give them the business and try to win the season series. We will find all that out and more when the two teams go to battle at the Luigi Ferrari in Genoa.

A.S Roma

Roma made only slight changes in their victory against Parma on Thursday. We can expect a very similar team with their usual 4-2-3-1 formation that Paulo Fonseca has used almost consistently. In a goal as always will be Pau Lopez as the Spaniard continues to thrive during his first season in the Italian capital. Roma’s backline remains more or less the same. At left-back all is always should be the Serbian sniper Alex Kolarov. There should be no changes with the centre-backs with the Gianluca Mancini and Chris Smalling but at right back we could see either Leonardo spinazzola who nearly joined Inter Milan this week before the deal collapsed or Roma Captain Alexsandro Florenzi. I do have a suspicion that spinazzola could make the start because of the collapsed deal. In the defensive Midfield we should see the Duo of Bryan Cristante who has just recovered from injury and Diawara who has been one Roma the best signings this summer. In the attacking Midfield controlling the central position should be Lorenzo Pellegrini once again after his two-goal performance against Parma he is in Superb form. On the left wing we could see the return of Justin kluivert to the starting lineup who looked exceptional when he came off the bench on Thursday. Then on the opposite side we will see either Cengiz or Diego Perotti in that slot. Then up front as the main Striker as always will likely be Edin Dzeko who was rested on Thursday night.

Genoa are in a very tricky situation with the relegation Zone weighing on their minds. Unfortunately for Genoa their two best attacking players are out with injuries. Both players Christian Kouame and Andrea Pinamonti both played really big roles in the first meeting neither player will be available for the match tomorrow night. This gives them practically no offensive prowess which largely will impact their ability to handle a really good Roma side. Genoa is very likely to come out of the 3-5-2 formation. The reason this is the best idea is because they need to try to hold off a good attack and they will do that with 5 defensive midfielders. Genoa is in the business of getting points they would love to win this game but their best chance is trying to slow them down. In goal even though I disagree with it will probably be Matteo Perin. Radu is he better goalkeeper he should not be on the bench but Genoa has just signed Perin so it’s unlikely they will make a change at this point. Their back three consists of Christian Romero, Criscito, and Biraschi. They will line up with 5 defensive midfielders. Barreca, cassata, schone, Sturaro, and Ankersen. Those are the five that we are likely to see tomorrow night they have a big role and trying to slow down the explosive players on Roma. The front two will be Pandev and Antonio Sabrina as they will try to pose at least some of threat offensively. Antonio Sabrina is the one to look for if they’re going to make any dent in the game it will be based on his performance.

Bottom line

As I mentioned this Roma team was without confidence and momentum prior to the win on Thursday. They still haven’t won a league game since winter break. This is a great opportunity for Roma to take advantage of a chance to get themselves back in the race for the Champions League in a better way. They fell out of it after back-to-back losses and they have a chance to reclaim it. I still believe that this team will make the Champions League by the end of the season however Roma have some tough games in the coming weeks which is why it’s important that they’re able to take pair business Tomorrow and night in Genoa. Genoa has already gone through multiple managers and don’t have much going for them. Roma from top to bottom no matter what the lineup is should cut them open. In the first match when these two teams played Roma struggled defensively since then they have drastically improved in fact their defense is one of their biggest strengths this season weird but true  even though Roma will be without Nicolo zaniolo for the rest of the season Roma can muster enough quality within this side to get the job done. With Lorenzo Pellegrini playing as good as he has in addition to Bryan cristante Roma’s best defensive midfielder and Justin kluivert Roma is most explosive player back in the lineup this should be simple. I’m not denying that Genoa has good players but I don’t think it’s enough to overcome Roma that has attacking pieces all over the place as well as a strong bench. The only way Roma lose this game is if they beat themselves. Genoa has struggled so much and it doesn’t seem that that’s going to make a big difference and the results but they’re not in good form and even though Roma have lost back-to-back games in the league they have too much quality not to win this game. Roma will probably make things a little hard on themselves because that’s what they’ve been doing the last few weeks but there’s no way they don’t win this game in fact I think there will be a breaking point where they totally break away and run through them. The Derby is next week Roma must win this game no excuses regardless what happens Roma cannot blow this they must win this game and I think they will.
