Manuela Giugliano forces late goal at Sampdoria as Roma closing in on top two #1345

Following the conclusion of the international break, the Roma women were back at it again. This weekend they took a stern test away from home against a brand new Serie A side Sampdoria who are having a very good season. The Roma women are red hot. After a little inconsistency during a stretch earlier in the season Spagna has got them playing a fantastic brand of football and are getting results almost constantly. The Roma women with only one to see it in their last four games would certainly be up for the challenge. There was potentially a lot at stake here with the victory Roma could go within two points of second in the League, a Champions League spot the very thing they are chasing. Coming off of victory before the break, Roma desired to keep things going away from home. Sampdoria put up a fight and looked a lot stronger than initially expected. However, Roma had control for much of the game and found their spaces to be effective. They came very close and numerous times in the early part of the first half before they eventually broke through. An initial by Anna Serturini strike was saved before Pamela Lazaro slid in the Finish to give Roma a 1–0 lead. It was more of the same from Roma in the second half, but a very unlucky sequence saw Sampdoria draw level. Roma went after it and played very aggressively; they were on the verge of breaking through, and it seemed like it was eventually going to happen, but time was against them. It looks like Roma was going to have to settle for a draw that would have been demoralizing considering the possibility of closing the gap between themselves and sassuolo. Manuela Giugliano fired a shot from just outside the box in the final minute of stoppage time, taking a big deflection off the Sampdoria Defender as Roma won it at death. Sampdoria played their part and made it very difficult with a firm performance from the goalkeeper, but in the end, the late Dramatics were Justified as Roma earned their points in the end as they climbed the table now only two points out of second place and seven points from the top of the League.

After preparations and predictions, the match was about to get underway in Sampdoria in what turned out to be a vital Clash, a dark horse in Sampdoria, and a Roma team that had been one of the most impressive sides during this campaign. Roma is a possession-based team that fuels into the attack; that’s exactly what we were subjected to in the early part of the first half. To beat a Roma side when you don’t have a talent advantage is all about taking advantage of the possession and the chances you have. As you can imagine, Roma had a lot of the ball and the opportunities to break were always going to be there. Roma got themselves into a dangerous area five minutes into the contest, getting an early corner kick. The delivery came in Elena Linari got her head on the end of it and a polarizing opportunity for Roma. The Italian center-half connects, but her had her went a bit off. However, despite that, we saw some early pressure from Roma. Nine minutes later, Roma would get their breakthrough in the 14th minute Corelli sends a beautiful cross from the Left Flank into the box to find one of the League’s best players, Anna Serturini gets on the end of it the Italian Superstar follows through on the first touch the goalkeeper making a tremendous save on the initial attempt however Pamela Lazaro zeroed in on the ball as she’s made a sliding strike making a connection as the ball ends up in the back of the neck as she falls to the ground. She explodes in Celebration as we are starting to see her get back into the form she showed last season, where she scored 10 goals in all competitions; her strike would give her all my a 1–0 lead. Just seven minutes later, Roma nearly got in again as Lazaro sent the ball into the box to find Valeria Pirone. Still, her header was a little off target in what was another golden opportunity for Roma as she nearly could have scored. Roma had control of the game as they continued to get into dangerous areas and be effective. Sampdoria got forward occasionally but not nearly enough to assert themselves in the game; they had a late strike at the end of the first half that missed wide, not remotely challenging Camellia Caesar at the end of the first half Roma maintained a 1–0 lead.

Roma had a very productive first half getting into those dangerous areas, able to find the back of the net in an early goal but didn’t miss an opportunity to extend the lead even further. All the momentum was with Roma, but in a narrow game that can change quickly, all it takes is one chance. Valeria Pirone hit a stunning strike from the left side near the post but misfired; the power was there, the accuracy. In the 56th minute, Sampdoria had an opportunity to get themselves back into the game. A through ball was played into the box the attacker was one-on-one with Camellia Caesar; however, the Romanian keeper made a brilliant save unfortunately due to dumb luck, the defender attempted clearing the ball out; unfortunately, it hit off the foot of Sampdoria as the ball rolls into the back of the net to get their equalizer. Sampdoria was not playing poorly, but they did not deserve their lifeline. Camellia Caesar made a fantastic save. The goal is not even at the defender’s fault; it was just an unfortunate situation that did not go their way. Sampdoria got themselves back into a game they shouldn’t have. This gave Sampdoria a little bit of inspiration, and they pushed forward, attempting a strike from the side of the box, forcing Camellia Caesar to extend, getting her fingertips on the end of what looked like it was an intended cross clearing the ball out as Roma can handle a scary situation. Roma was running out of time; there was a little more than 20 minutes left, and Roman needed a goal. Manuela Giugliano hit a deep strike that had distance and accuracy. Still, the goalkeeper managed to make the save. 2 minutes later Roma nearly scored an unbelievable cross coming from Midfield as the ball dropped at the same time Angelica Sofia was pushing forward she caught the ball with the corner of her eye the very edge of the box just inside of it in what was a motion of incredible difficulty she strikes the ball out of the air at a distance has the accuracy in what was a beautiful connection it would have been one of the goals of the season however the Sampdoria goalkeeper somehow was able to extend and get her hand on it Roma were unable to grab the rebound. Roma was significantly the better team, and it seemed like there wasn’t a way through until the last possible moment with a bit of luck may have been on their side. In the 93rd minute, just seconds left of the stoppage time, Manuela Juliana wearing on the night the captain’s contribution following through on a strike just barely outside the box that found a deflection coming off the Sampdoria defense as the ball rolls into the back of the net late dramatics as Roma win it at the death getting the points the absolutely deserved as the Roma bench explodes as it would signal the full-time whistle with Roma winning with a 2–1 victory thanks to a late own-goal as they are now just two points from 2nd Place.

The Roma ladies have now won four of their last five games. They started the season with four consecutive victories. Roma underwent an inconsistent stretch, nearly beating Juventus as they fell short after initially taking the lead a tough draw with AC Milan scoring first again and a defeat against Inter Milan. After a hot start, they were humble, but ever since then, they’ve been on a mission and have been ripping through everyone that’s been put in front of them. Sampdoria certainly had moments in this game and had an exceptional performance from the goalkeeper. Still, for the most part, Roma controlled and dictated the tempo had a lot of high-quality chances, and eventually, they come through late in the game a bit of ladylike, perhaps? Probably but the results were ultimately deserved. Sampdoria scored to level things, but their goal was also kind of down to dumb luck. It was a very positive performance from Sampdoria that currently sits in the top six it was a test, but ultimately a test capable of dealing with. Roma wins again as they keep on rolling. Next week will be the first-ever installment of the Derby Della Capitale on the women’s side. It should be a certainly exciting affair and another chance for Roma to pick up some more points and start the head-to-head between the Rome clubs on the right foot. Lazio currently sits in 11th Place with one victory conceding 33; it should be no problem for Roma to deal with them next weekend, something that should be exciting nonetheless at this Roma team is starting to formulate into a significant threat for Champions League qualification in a battle for Champions League football sometimes you need results like this and Roma to do their job to win it late.
