Tammy Abrham and Lorezo Pellagrini shine in Turin as Roma sequre Europa League #1473

Score: A.S Roma 3 Torino 0FT

It’s been a long and hectic season for this Roma team. As we come down to the final League match of the campaign, we still have plenty still be decided. Following a soul-crushing draw against already relegated Venezia on Saturday night, a match in which Roma hat 47 shots and 90 minutes. The draw put them in a vulnerable situation with the European places still yet to be determined. Sampdoria rocked Fiorentina, allowing Roma to control their Europa League destiny still. Meanwhile, milinkovic-savic late equalizer at Juventus still puts Lazio in Prime position to finish in the top five. Roma would travel to the Grande Torino for the final match of the season. This match was originally scheduled for Sunday the 22nd; however, Roma is traveling to Albania for the UEFA conference League final on Wednesday. Upon request, Serie A rescheduled the game for Friday as the league gives Romo more rest and more time to prepare for Feyenoord. A victory on Friday would give them qualification for the Europa League with the top-five still in their sights if they’re given a little Help from Hellas Verona on Saturday. Meanwhile, Ivan juric has a very average Torino team that he is taken into the top 10 with the ambition to have a solid finish to the season. Not the easiest place to play for Roma, but it is simply a must-win to secure their Europa League status for next season; they needed results, while Torino vows to give them a tough challenge. We approached kickoff at the Stadio Grande Torino in the final match of the campaign.

After preparations and predictions, the final matchday of the season kicked off in Turin as Roma and Torino locked horns on Friday night as the match got underway. Torino had a good bulk of the ball in front of their fans, with their supporters behind them. Roma allowed them to dictate in the early parts of the game. As Roma let them come at them, the defensive structure was well-equipped to deal with what was put before them. Sasa Lukic tried firing a strike from outside the box, but the defense got in the way of it. A minute later, a cross was sent into the box from the wing searching for Tommaso Pobga; the young midfielder got his head on end but missed the mark. Roma got a quick reply coming off in corner. Jordan veretout sent the ball into the box, finding shomurodov making a connection with his head but couldn’t quite direct it. Roma was playing very calculated, sitting back allowing while Torino came forward. This wasn’t a defensive approach; they waited for the right moment to shift the momentum. Sasa Lukic went for goal from distance again, but the result was the same rui Patricio showed minimal reaction. Right around the 10th minute, Roma got on the offensive as Tammy Abraham found Lorenzo Pellegrini from outside the box; the Roma captain certainly had the range in his bag but put too much power into it as Roma can’t put themselves in front. However, slowly started taking control. Shortly after, Sergio Oliveira looked to hit from range, but the defense deflected his strike. Roma kept up the pressure putting themselves in a dangerous position as Lorenzo Pellegrini facilitated a cross into the box coming from the outside. Max kumbulla is getting a touch on it with his head forcing the goalkeeper into a save. Less than 10 minutes later, Tammy Abraham hits from range, putting a little too much on it, firing wide. An almost immediate response sees Josip Brekalo strikethrough a Dennis Praet cross as Rui Patricio had to make a rare save as he corralled it. Torino couldn’t find any sense in threatening Roma, as even though they were pushing, Roma was hardly in a vulnerable position. Andrea Belotti gathers the ball on the side of the Box before misfiring. It was a little back and forth, with Roma having slightly more control considering their positioning in defense of areas while also showing the knack for pushing the ball forward. Roma needed to win the game; one of these changes would have to land for them right on schedule. Lorenzo Pellegrini and Tammy Abraham connect. In the 33rd minute, Lorenzo Pellegrini picks off the ball in the Midfield before orchestrating a beautifully crafted ball into Tammy Abraham, who was running in the Box. Tammy Abraham collected it, finding space around two Defenders before tucking it into the bottom right corner to give Roma a 1–0 lead; it would be his 26th goal of the season. As the first half began to wind down, Torino saw a shot deflected from Cristian Ansaldi, then Tommaso Pobga came close with a well-hit strike landing adjusted on top of the net. Fortunately for Roma, they would be given an opportunity to extend their lead right before the break in the 41st minute, Tammy Abraham, while running into the box, was taken out by the goalkeeper the referee wasted no time pointing to the spot as Roma would have a chance to take a two-goal lead into the second half. Tammy Abraham would step up, hitting it right down the middle into the back of the net to give Roma a 2–0 lead scoring his 27th goal of the season. At the end of the first half, Cristian ansaldi sent a cross into the box, finding Samuel Ricci with a late chance but couldn’t get a goal back, ending the first half as Roma would hold a 2–0 lead with 45 minutes to play. Thanks to a brace from Tammy Abraham.

Roma wasn’t necessarily dominant in the first 45 minutes, but a late surge at the end of the first half has Roma holding a two-goal lead. With Roma’s now 45 minutes away from qualification into the Europa League for next season. Mourinho had a judgment call to make; he was in a situation where it would be reasonable to consider taking out some of his more critical players now that he’s sitting on a two-goal lead. Nonetheless, Mourinho kept his team the same. Ivan juric, on the other hand, showed, but he still had the intention to get his team aback into the game as the Torino boss made three changes bringing Ricardo Rodriguez, Marco Pjaca, and Demba Seck. Roma looked to keep the pedal on the metal to start the second half. Shomurodov gathers the ball from a difficult angle before striking, but the Torino defense blocked his attempt at goal. On the other end, Tommaso Pobga cut in at the left side of the box, trying to find enough space to pick out the bottom corner, but Rui Patricio manages to track the ball well as he makes the save. It was a little nip and Tuck, especially at the end of the first half into the second half. However, Roma was well in control and never really were threatened. Not long after Leo spinazzola found Lorenzo Pellegrini from inside the Box, the Roma captain from the side found space but was collapsed by the defense getting in the way of his shot. Roma did not need to operate aggressively as they were somewhat coasting with the lead. With about a half-hour to go, Andrea Belotti misfires For Torino before Roma goes to the bench. Jose Mourinho brings on Rick karsdorp for Nicola Zalewski and Bryan cristante in for Sergio Oliviera. Not long after, Jordan veretout is denied from a distance. Torino would make a nether change, but nothing seemed to be working. Roma had the game well within their hands and wasn’t doing anything risky to jeopardize it. Roma eventually brings on Nicolo Zaniolo for shomurodov. A minute after coming on, Nicolo Zaniolo, in the 77th minute, was taking cleanout by the defense. Roma was given another penalty this time; Lorenzo Pellegrini stepped up, with Abraham giving the ball to his captain. Lorenzo Pellegrini converted the penalty from 12 yards out into the bottom corner; as Roma took a 3–0 lead, it would be his 14th goal of the season. With very little time, Rolando Mandragora tries to give a consolation goal but cannot do so. Stephan El Shaarawy nearly scores on the break, and then Mattias Vina cannot score late as the full-time whistle goes. Roma will be playing in the Europa League next season following a convincing 3–0 victory that secures a top-six finish; at least Roma will head into the conference League final on Wednesday in High Spirits with momentum driving them.

This was performance desperation they showed and exemplified a sense of urgency. They have a massive final on Wednesday, but Roma was able to put it aside and put together a performance of magnitude. The Europa League Chase was incredibly hectic. To finish in the top six, Roma needed a victory away at Torino. Fiorentina and Atalanta are not far behind with an opportunity to jump Roma for the final Europa League spot with wins on the weekend. Had Roma dropped points, their qualification for the Europa League would have been out of their hands. Going into this game, they lacked a sense of urgency over the past three weeks. Ever since they Advanced to the conference League final, they didn’t approach The League games with the level of importance, but they should have been shown. Roma could have easily picked up maximum points in all three games, but because they lost focus on the league, they put themselves in this position where they needed to win tonight to secure Europa League and a top-six finish. Before this, Roma had all the control and the momentum surrounding potentially a top-five finish and finishing ahead of Lazio. Unfortunately, that is no longer in their control, but hopefully, Hellas Verona will do them a favor on Saturday. On the night Roma wasn’t going to be denied, they came out with a very aggressive approach signaling their intent, all that least finishing in the top six. They were never going to let this game slip away from them. It is the type of mentality they should have played with leading up to this put in a game of so much importance that they made their intentions felt and focused on getting the results they needed. Roma was able to give some rest to a few players while getting to see Leo spinazzola in action again. The importance of the match against Torino could not have been clearer; it was an uncomfortable position that they put themselves into, but they came together and showed their brilliance. Hopefully, we’ll be able to gather what they did and take that momentum into Albania and win a trophy for the club for the first time since 2008. Lorenzo Pellegrini and Tammy Abraham handle the business. Lorenzo Pellegrini scored a penalty and supplied an assist. Then the leading man up top, Tammy Abraham, scored a brace getting his season tally to 17 in the league and 27 in all competitions. Mourinho and Roma ended on a high with a dominating performance against a good team, and no one got injured; they had four days to prepare for the biggest match of their lives, but they got the job done and, at a very minimum, will finish in the top 6 with still a slight chance of a top-five finish but Europa League football is secured.
